For storytellers

Why Casa Mila (La Pedrera) matters

La Pedrera means the stone quarry, which is what locals first called Gaudi's undulating apartment building. There are almost no straight lines on the facade. The real surprise is the roof, where strangely shaped chimneys stand like helmeted guards over the city. At night the roof is sometimes open for evening visits.

Talking points

  • The nickname La Pedrera means the quarry.
  • The rooftop chimneys have been compared to helmeted warriors.
  • It is part of the UNESCO Works of Antoni Gaudi.
