Why Sagrada Familia matters

Nothing prepares you for stepping inside the Sagrada Familia. Stone columns branch like trees toward the ceiling, and stained glass floods the interior with red, orange, blue and green light. Antoni Gaudi began working on it in the late nineteenth century, and building has continued ever since, long after his death. It is part church, part architectural experiment, and it is still growing.

Talking points

  • Gaudi devoted the last decades of his life to the project.
  • Construction has been going on for well over a century and is not yet complete.
  • Part of the basilica is on the UNESCO list as one of the Works of Antoni Gaudi.
