Why Park Guell matters

Park Guell was meant to be a garden city, but it ended up as a public park full of Gaudi's playful touches: a mosaic lizard on the stairs, columns shaped like palm trees and a serpentine bench covered in colourful ceramic fragments. From the terrace you look out over Barcelona to the sea. Go early, when the light is soft and the crowds thinner.

Talking points

  • It started as a failed housing development and became a city park.
  • The long bench on the terrace is covered in broken ceramics, an approach called trencadis.
  • It is part of the UNESCO Works of Antoni Gaudi.

Good to know: The monumental zone has timed tickets, but the rest of the park is free to walk.
