Why Gothic Quarter matters

Barcelona began here as a Roman town, and under the medieval lanes of the Gothic Quarter you can still find Roman walls and columns. The cathedral rises above a maze of tight alleys that open into quiet squares with orange trees, small cafes and guitar players. Get a little lost; it is the point.

Talking points

  • Parts of the old Roman city walls are still visible.
  • Many streets are narrow enough to touch both walls.
  • Most of the district is pedestrian-only.
