Why Casa Batllo matters

On the Passeig de Gracia, Casa Batllo looks like a dream. The facade ripples with coloured tiles, the balconies resemble masks or skulls, and the roof arches like the back of a dragon. Inside, there are no straight lines; everything curves like the inside of a sea creature. It shows Gaudi at his most imaginative.

Talking points

  • The roof is often said to resemble the back of a dragon.
  • Inside, nearly everything is curved, from staircases to door frames.
  • It is part of the UNESCO Works of Antoni Gaudi.
