Why Diamond Beach matters

Across the road from the glacier lagoon, icebergs flow out through a short channel to the sea, then wash up on the black sand. They look like glittering diamonds against the dark beach. Each wave rearranges the scene, and photographers love the golden light. Keep your distance from the waves, which can be dangerous.

Talking points

  • Ice chunks from the lagoon wash up on black sand.
  • The scene changes every day.
  • Waves are strong; keep back from the water.
