Why Höfn matters

Höfn is a small fishing harbour with a big backdrop: the Vatnajökull glacier cap shimmers on the horizon. The town is famed for its langoustine, which you can eat fresh at the harbour restaurants. It's an ideal base for Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and the black dunes at Stokksnes. Evenings are quiet and starry, and in winter you have a good shot at northern lights.

Talking points

  • Langoustine is the local speciality.
  • The glacier Vatnajökull is visible from town.
  • Jökulsárlón is about an hour away by road.
