Why Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon matters

Jökulsárlón is a lagoon of floating icebergs, blue and white and sometimes streaked with black volcanic ash. They break off a glacier and drift slowly toward the sea. Seals sometimes lounge on the ice. Boat tours bring you close to the bergs. It's one of Iceland's most magical sights, at its best in the soft light of dawn or dusk.

Talking points

  • Icebergs come from the glacier tongue.
  • Seals are often seen in the lagoon.
  • Boat tours operate in the warmer months.
