Why Helsinki Cathedral matters

Helsinki Cathedral is the symbol of the city: a white neoclassical church with a green dome and four smaller domes, standing at the top of a broad flight of steps. The steps are a popular place to sit and watch the square. Inside, the interior is plain and light, in contrast to the grand exterior. The cathedral was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, who shaped much of central Helsinki.

Talking points

  • It was designed by the German-born architect Carl Ludvig Engel.
  • The steps are the best place to sit and watch the square.
