Why Suomenlinna Sea Fortress matters

Suomenlinna is a fortress, a park and a neighbourhood all at once. It was built in the 18th century on a cluster of islands to protect the coast, and today people still live here among the old bastions and barracks. Take the ferry from the Market Square, wander the walls, picnic on the grass and explore tunnels and cannons. It is one of the best half days you can spend in Helsinki, and the ferry ride itself gives a lovely view of the city.

Talking points

  • The fortress was begun in the 18th century, when Finland was part of Sweden.
  • Hundreds of people live on the islands today.
  • The ferry from Market Square takes around fifteen minutes.
