Why Senate Square matters

Senate Square is where Helsinki shows off its neoclassical side. Straight lines, pale buildings and a statue of Tsar Alexander II in the middle create a stately setting. The cathedral rises above on the north side, while the university and government buildings stand on the other sides. In summer it fills with picnickers and in December with a Christmas market.

Talking points

  • It was designed as the centre of the new capital in the 19th century.
  • The cathedral stairs act as a grandstand for the square.
  • A Christmas market takes over the square in December.
