Why Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion matters

Cape Sounion is a headland of white marble columns above the sea, about an hour from Athens. The temple was dedicated to Poseidon and sailors saw it as they came toward Athens. Visit near sunset: the columns glow gold and the Aegean stretches in every direction. The drive down the coast is scenic too.

Talking points

  • The temple stands on a cliff above the Aegean.
  • Sunset here is a classic Athens day trip.
  • The coastal drive from Athens adds to the trip.
