Why Plaka matters

Plaka is where Athens slows down. Narrow lanes wind up toward the Acropolis, past neoclassical houses, little churches and shops selling sandals and olive oil. Tavernas put tables on the steps, and you can hear music in the evenings. It is touristy, but still charming, especially if you wander away from the main drag into the quieter side streets.

Talking points

  • It sits right under the Acropolis, with views between the buildings.
  • Side streets are far quieter than the main shopping lanes.
  • Neoclassical houses and tiny churches hide around every corner.
