Why Syntagma Square matters

Syntagma is Athens' main civic square, facing the Parliament building. In front stands the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the Evzones in traditional uniforms. The changing of the guard is a brief ceremony that draws a crowd, especially on Sundays when a bigger version takes place. The National Garden begins just behind.

Talking points

  • The Evzones guards wear traditional uniforms with pleated skirts.
  • A larger ceremony takes place on Sundays.
  • The National Garden is right behind.
