Why Monastiraki Square matters

Monastiraki is the busy hinge of central Athens. A mosque, a Byzantine church and the Acropolis all share the same view, with a flea market of vintage finds, souvenirs and street food in the alleys around it. Rooftop bars nearby give an evening look at the lit-up rock. It is noisy, colourful and very Athenian.

Talking points

  • The Acropolis rises behind the square.
  • Flea markets and souvenir shops fill the lanes around it.
  • Rooftop bars here are favourites for sunset.
