Why Anafiotika matters

Anafiotika feels like a Greek island dropped into the city. Whitewashed houses, blue doors and bougainvillea cling to the slope under the rock. It was built by workers from the island of Anafi, which is why the style looks Cycladic. The lanes are narrow and quiet, and residents still live here, so tread softly.

Talking points

  • It was built by islanders, so it looks like a Cycladic village.
  • The Acropolis walls rise directly above.
  • People live here, so keep voices low.
