Why Acropolis of Athens matters

Look up from almost anywhere in Athens and there it is. The Acropolis is a rocky hill crowned by temples from the fifth century BC, with the Parthenon at its centre. Walk up the path, pass the grand entrance gate, and stand beside columns that have watched the city for over two thousand years. The view over Athens is wide, and on a clear day you can see the sea. Most of the sculptures have been moved to a museum for protection.

Talking points

  • The Parthenon was built as a temple to Athena, the city's patron goddess.
  • Many of the original sculptures are now kept in the Acropolis Museum.
  • Go at opening time in summer to avoid heat and queues.

Good to know: Go first thing in the morning or late afternoon in summer, wear shoes with grip because the marble is slippery, and bring water.
