Why Mount Lycabettus matters

Lycabettus is the tallest hill in central Athens. Climb the winding path or take the funicular, and you reach a white chapel with a view across the city to the Acropolis and the sea. It is a favourite sunset spot, and the lights of the city come on below you. Bring a layer in the evening, because the summit can be breezy.

Talking points

  • The view reaches from the Acropolis to the sea.
  • A funicular runs through the hill if you do not want to climb.
  • Sunset is the most popular time.

Good to know: Walk up by the paths from Kolonaki for a gentle climb; sunset is busy, so arrive early.
