Why Ancient Agora of Athens matters

This was the daily centre of ancient Athens, a place for markets, courts and political debate. Walk the paths between ruins and you reach the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved ancient temples anywhere. A restored stoa now houses a small museum. It is greener and quieter than the Acropolis, and a good place to think about how democracy grew in a place where citizens met in the open.

Talking points

  • Political debate in the Agora helped shape early democracy.
  • The Temple of Hephaestus is remarkably well preserved.
  • It is shady and calmer than the Acropolis.
