Why Sibelius Monument matters

In a small park by the water stands a wave of hundreds of welded steel pipes that looks like organ pipes frozen mid-flow, or a forest of silver birches. It was made in the 1960s by the sculptor Eila Hiltunen to honour Jean Sibelius, Finland's national composer. Beside it there is a simpler bronze head of Sibelius himself. The setting is peaceful, and it is a fine spot for a short walk by the shore.

Talking points

  • Hundreds of steel pipes form a single abstract sculpture.
  • It was made in the 1960s by Eila Hiltunen.
  • A bronze head of Sibelius stands beside it.
