Why Barceloneta Beach matters

Few big European cities have a real beach a short walk from the centre. Barceloneta is lively and urban, with beach bars, volleyball games and seafood restaurants behind the sand. It was a fishermen's neighbourhood and still has narrow streets with tapas bars. Visit outside the midsummer crowds if you can.

Talking points

  • The neighbourhood behind the beach was traditionally a fishermen's quarter.
  • The beach was created for the 1992 Olympics.
  • Beware of pickpockets on busy days.
