Why Tempelhofer Feld matters

Only in Berlin can you cycle down a runway. The old Tempelhof airport, once a famous airlift hub, is now a huge open park, with the runways and taxiways left in place. On a sunny weekend you will see kite flyers, skaters, joggers and picnickers. It is free, vast and a great way to see the local life.

Talking points

  • The old airport buildings are still there
  • Runways are used by skaters and cyclists
  • It is open to everyone, free of charge
